Research Studies in Progress
August 2011 - August 2012: We are currently researching the impact of qigong massage on young children with Down syndrome. This project advances research investigating the results of
this treatment in young children with Down syndrome. Last year, a pilot study showed promising
results in ten children with Down syndrome on measures of general health as
well as speech and motor skills. This project takes the next step by
researching the effect of treatment on young children with Down syndrome in a
small, randomized controlled trial.
Chinese medicine treatments such as this are directed at improving the
underlying strength and health of the child, so that within the genetic
limitations, the child is supported in reaching their full potential. The program includes a substantial component
of parent training and support, such that by the end of five months, the
parent/caregiver is fully empowered to continue the massage program on his or
her own.
