Eligibility to Participate in the QST Studies

Trainers/Therapists
In order to become trained in QST, trainers/therapists should:
  • Have at least two years experience working with children with autism and their families
  • Have an excellent level of general heath
  • Have a strong desire to commit time and energy to learning this intervention
To become certified QST therapists, individuals must participate in a 46 hour course, including 24 hours of supervision, complete a formal written and practical exam, and master the skills required to successfully implement QST.

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders
In order to participate in the QST studies, children should:
  • Have an educational and/or medical diagnosis of autism
  • Be under 18 years of age
  • Be on little or no medication (Medication reduces the effectiveness of Qigong. The same can be true of supplements.)
  • Not be in any intensive medical or behavioral interventions during the QST. (Intensive medical or behavioral interventions should be completed before beginning QST, they are contraindicated at the same time as QST.)

Children with Cerebral Palsy or Downs Syndrome
In order to participate in the QST studies, children should:
  • Have a diagnosis of motor developmental delay
  • Be under age four
  • Be on little or no medication (Medication reduces the effectiveness of Qigong. The same can be true of supplements.)
Children who have uncontrolled seizures, anticipate major surgery with anesthesia in the next ten months, or receive other new interventions for orthopedic impairment will not be eligible for the study.

Parents
Parents with children in Parent Training and Support  QST study should:
  • Be willing to attend a three-hour presentation and training on Qigong massage
  • Be willing and able to give the child a 15-minute qigong massage daily for four months
  • Be willing to attend seven, 30-minute coaching sessions
  • Be willing not to start any new interventions unless medically necessary during the period of the study
Parents with children in the CP/Downs study should:
  • Be willing to attend a three-hour presentation and training on Qigong massage
  • Be willing and able to give the child a 15-minute qigong massage daily for four months
  • Be willing not to start any new interventions unless medically necessary during the period of the study
  • Be willing to transport the child to the training sessions
